This is a knowledge gathering, dispensing, and discussion project where Kohenites whose surnames have become something other than the usual Cohen-related surnames can discover their connections to the big Cohanic tree. Please note that I am using the term 'Kohenite' to mean a descendant from the Cohanic tree, but not necessarily officially a Cohain by Halakahic standards. There are various ways in which Cohanic status can be forfeited by a Kohenite descendant. The purpose of this project is genealogical rather than to establish Halakhic status and yichus.

The experience begins with a list of surnames already proven to connect to a Cohanic legacy, which list also includes many of the standard Cohanic descriptors (spelling may vary, list last updated on 23 APR 2023):.

If you have one of these surnames (or a derivative thereof) then you MAY be of Cohanic descent AND be part of the largest family tree of Cohanim, whether you know about this history or not.

Using the results of a study I have been conducting for several years, it is now very easy to answer the question for a cost of about US$21, payable to a lab I have no connection to. This test will determine whether the sample is positive or negative for one position on the y-chromosome known as S17446. The test will produce no other genetic information nor any matching to other test takers, and the result will be seen by nobody but you (unless you want to tell the world). The test is available here: https://www.yseq.net/product_info.php?products_id=20111&osCsid=5236....

The project is offering free testing of certain lines: Getz, Schotten, Falk, Stern, Meisels, Adler, Lasker, Englander, Karelits, Gurion, Burstein, Fried, Traube, Gans, Menz, Glanz, Poppers, and Trier (persons interested in this offer may contact the project admin privately).

Any person who winds up positive for this marker, can, if desired, proceed to identify which specific branch of Cohanim their ancestors descend from, and if that branch happens to be populated by other known Cohanim, it may then be possible to discover quite a bit more about their Cohanic ancestry.

There is no need to join this project to benefit from the information provided here. Project profiles should be limited to lines or persons who may benefit from the information conveyed here. Discussion questions and comments are more than welcomed.
