Many urupā (Māori burial grounds) are traditional burial grounds and are of family, spiritual, cultural and historical importance. Kutarere marae is located in Kutarere, about 18 km west of Ōpōtiki. Its principal hapū is Te Ūpokorehe of Whakatōhea iwi. The wharenui is called Te Poho o Tamaterangi and the wharekai is Ani-i-waho.
