The purpose of this project is to document the Geni profiles of families with the surname Lustgarten from towns in the Kaunas Gubernia of the Russian Empire, now in present-day Lithuania.
There are a number of Lustgarten families that immigrated from Eastern Europe, including some from Romania. The families in this project lived in towns that were in close proximity to one another, and it is probable that some or most were related to one another.
The towns these families are documented living in prior to 1900 include:
- Akmenė [Lith], Akmian [Yid], Okmyany [Rus], Okmiany [Pol], Okmyene, Okmyan, Akmyane, Akmeyan, Akmenės
- Klykoliai [Lith], Klikol [Yid], Klikl [Yid], Klikoli [Rus], Klikole [Pol], Klikul, Klykuolių, Klikolyay
- Kuršėnai [Lith], Kurshan [Yid], Kurshany [Rus], Kurszany [Pol], Kuršēni [Latv], Kurschenen [Ger], Kurshenay, Kurshchenay, Kuržėnų, Koršienā
- Luokė [Lith], Luknik [Yid], Lukniki [Rus], Łukniki [Pol], Luokės, Lavkov, Luknif, Loknik, Luykeve
The distances range from very close to a moderate distance (e.g., Klykoliai is 14 km or a 3 hour walk from Akmenė and 41 km or an 8 hour walk from Kuršėnai). There certainly were horse and carts, if not railroads, in the mid 19th century and branches of families did move within the same Gubernia (province) for work or for marriage.
Luokė is 29 km from Kuršėnai and 43 km from Akmenė.
