Official Website
The county was created on February 27, 1879 and was named for Marie Antoinette Chevalier (1793-1865). The meaning, however, is contested. The French and Indians on the river when pronouncing "Marie Antoinette" would shorten the name by pronouncing it "Marinette." Another explanation is that the county and town are named after a French-Indian woman by the name of Marinette Jacobs.
