Mississauga, the 6th largest city in Canada, with a population of 713,443 (2011 Canadian Census). It is located on the shores of Lake Ontario to the west of Toronto in the municipality of Peel. Canada's busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, is located in Mississauga. Today's Mississauga was formed by the merger of Mississauga, Port Credit and Streetsville.

The name Mississauga comes from the Anishinaabe word Misi-zaagiing, meaning "Those at the great river mouth"

Toronto Township, comprising most of today's Mississauga, was formed on 2 August 1805 when officials from York (now Toronto), purchased land from the Mississaugas (an aboriginal tribe living in the area).

Before 1968, Mississauga was led by reeves for the townships of Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Lakeview, Lorne Park, Malton, Meadowvale, Sheridan, and Toronto Township.
