Origins of the Cup

Horse racing is an Australian institution, it has been an important event since European settlement of this land, by the mid 19th century horse racing clubs were widespread throughout the colony and arguably the centre of cultural activities for a large proportion of the population, by 1859 there was wide interest in thoroughbred breeding and the first stud books had appeared.

Horses were part of the national identity and celebrated as much as were the riders, poems and stories appeared all over the country, tragedy and romance, adventure and humor kindled visions and started dreams and they told of the events of the everyday lives of the ordinary and the unique individuals that made up the population of this country it was this rich tapestry of men and horses and the ever increasing population seeking a new life that brought us to the beginnings of the Melbourne Cup.

The Victorian Turf Club established in 1852 and the Victorian Jockey Club in 1857 introduced the first Melbourne Cup in 1861 run over a distance of 2 miles, the cup is the richest handicap race in the world, in a handicap race horses are allocated different weights according to age and prior performance, this means that the winner must overcome their handicap to win the race against a field of champions from all over the world all handicapped in the same manner, the greatest champion of them all is the winner and from time to time we see these champions come back again and again to compete for the massive prize on offer of over $6,000,000 and occasionally they defy all the odds and may win back to back, only one has won the race 3 times and amazingly in succession the mighty mare Makybe Diva who won in 2003, 2004 & 2005, with the very talented jockey Glen Boss her rider on each occasion.

There are many horse races that are famous around the globe but there are none as famous or as desired as the Melbourne Cup.

First Melbourne Cup

On 7 November 1861, about 4000 people gathered at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne to watch a horserace that would become one of Australia’s most important sporting events.

Fifty-seven horses were slated to take part in the race, though only seventeen actually started. Sydney horse, Archer, trained by Etienne de Mestre, was the winner by a staggering six lengths.

Today, the Melbourne Cup is known as ‘the race that stops a nation’, drawing crowds of thousands on the first Tuesday in November every year.
