The Mongols, in the years following their heyday in 13th century, retreated to the territories of (modern state) Mongolia and China's Inner Mongolia, as well as large regions in today's Russia. Starting in early 1600s, they became allied with, or subject to, Manchu's rules. Throughout the centuries the Mongolian aristocrats were bestowed various titles of Khans and Princes, and were frequently married with the Aisin Gioro clan, the imperial family.
Language here is a big issue. The documents available are in Mongolian, Manchu, and (most readily available) in Chinese. The Mongolian is of course in the traditional script, not the one used in modern Mongolia, which adopted a Cyrillic script under Soviet influence. The following is taken from a Chinese source, but of course other language experts are very welcome to contribute.
The most notable family is by far the descendants of Genghis Khan, who by now took the surname Borjigit, or 博爾濟吉特 in Chinese.
