Established in 1637 as Upper Norfolk County and the name Nansemond was adopted in 1646. It became the independent city of Nansemond in 1972 and merged with the independent city of Suffolk in 1974. The entire area is now known as Suffolk. However, historically references to Nansemond do come up and this project is to document those instances.
