New York/New Jersey Metrostars was the name of the Major League Soccer franchise that is currently known as the New York Red Bulls. During its first two seasons, 1996 and 1997, it was known as the New York/New Jersey Metrostars and then known as the MetroStars from 1998 until the purchase of the franchise on March 9, 2016 by Red Bull GmbH.
