History

Established in 1994 by Young Enterprise, the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame recognises and celebrates individuals who have made a significant contribution to the economic and social development of New Zealand.

Laureates are admitted to the Hall at an annual black-tie gala dinner. Each Laureate has a story of enterprise, hard work and success. Most have contributed generously to their communities.

Bill Buckley is the founder of Buckley Systems Limited, the world’s leading supplier of precision electromagnets used in the manufacture of more than 90% of the world’s silicon chips. Bill took an early interest in nuclear physics before embarking on a career in engineering and later, the goal of building electromagnets. In 1986, Bill established a new company to enter the US market and today, Buckley Systems Limited's range of products are not only used in the semiconductor ion implant industry but also medical proton and photon therapy – systems that will revolutionise cancer treatments of the future.

Bill is a generous supporter of the motor-racing community and has been recognised with multiple awards for his success including the 2013 World Class New Zealander Award for Manufacturing, Design and Innovation and a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit award for services to technology, business and motorsport. Trelise Cooper Dame Trelise Cooper Fashion Design

Dame Trelise Cooper established her iconic fashion design business in the early 1980s with her first boutique opening in 1985. The Trelise Cooper international reputation is recognised by magazines such as Vogue and Marie Claire, with styles worn by many international celebrities. Trelise also produces Trelise Cooper Interiors, a fabric range made in association with textile house Charles Parson and her signature 'Trelise' fragrance was launched in late 2009. Trelise was named a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2004 and elevated to a Dame in the 2014 New Year Honours list.

Dame Trelise is a patron of the Breast Cancer Research Trust and Auckland RSA and supports Habitats for Humanity. Dame Trelise also sponsors Tomorrow's Foundation, a charity in India and undertakes volunteer work for Women's Refuge, St James Mission Food Bank and Crisis Centre. Alan Gibbs is one of New Zealand's most successful entrepreneurs and inventors. He studied engineering and economics, later becoming a diplomat in London. On his return to New Zealand in the 1960's, Gibbs continued to work as an economist while also making plans to build his own car. Gibbs began experimenting with amphibious vehicles in the early 1990s. He has developed 11 different automobiles and has more than 50 different patents in his name.

Gibbs has also completed projects for the New Zealand Government to advise on restructuring the public hospital system, and to privatize the government owned forestry sector. He was the driving force behind the introduction of Sky TV and co-lead the syndicate that purchased New Zealand Telecom to undertake its restructuring.

Gibbs is one of New Zealand's leading art collectors, and has established the internationally acclaimed “Gibbs Farm” in Kaipara - the world’s largest outdoor sculpture park. Craig Graeme recompose Graeme & Craig Turner Manufacturing

Brothers Graeme and Craig are the third generation of Turners to run Sleepyhead – following on from father Bert, Uncle Roy and Grandfather Sidney, who saw the potential of a business that made natural seed fibre mattresses out of a small factory shed in Auckland 80 years ago. Since then Sleepyhead has consistently led the market in quality and value. The Turner family’s hands-on ownership through the generations has seen continuity of management and an accumulation of expertise that is unrivalled. Today directors Graeme and Craig are regularly on the factory floor monitoring, perfecting and improving the way things are done. Constant investment in research and technology has produced ‘world first’ innovations such as Sensorzone and their commitment to local production has created over 1200 jobs across Australasia. Now one of NZ’s most trusted brands, the majority of Kiwis now sleep on a Sleepyhead bed.

James Dilworth 1 James Dilworth 1815 - 1894 Businessman, Philanthropist

Born in Ireland in 1815, James made his way to NZ in 1841, becoming a successful businessman and farmer, accumulating significant wealth through his various interests. James was a founding trustee of Auckland Savings Bank, Elected member of Auckland Provincial Council and a supporter of the Kindergarten movement and the YMCA; James bequeathed the bulk of his estate to establish the Dilworth Ulster Institute which was charged with setting up a school for boys. Today Dilworth School is the largest boarding only school in Australasia and the endowment which funds the scholarships for students has grown to a level of $550 million. The boys are drawn from low decile environments and receive a robust education fulfilling James wish that they become "good and useful members of society". Elspeth Kennedy Elspeth Kennedy 1931 - 2017 Stockbroker, Governance, Philanthropy

Pioneering businesswoman Elspeth Kennedy was born in Invercargill and began her career at the Invercargill City Council and teaching music. Kennedy was the first woman to become a member of the New Zealand stock exchange and also the first woman to run her own broking business. After a successful career as a stock broker and director of various companies Elspeth turned her energy to improving the care of the terminally ill. As chairwoman of the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust from 1998 to 2014, she was instrumental in building the first hospice facility in Nelson which has since grown to a 10 bed palliative care inpatient unit

Elspeth was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire in 1990, and a Companion of the Queen's Service Order in the New Year honours for her valuable voluntary service to the community. Tony Nightingale 1 Tony Nightingale 1939 - 2003 Manufacturing

Tony Nightingale, son of Resene Paints founder Ted, joined the Resene family business in the late 1950s and officially took over in 1972. Tony made two decisions that transformed both Resene and the industry: developing lead-free paint; and marketing directly to trade and architects. His intuitive feel for the market expanded the business dramatically. The purchase of Mason Handprints a small wallpaper company. The central Wellington office was soon transformed into Resene’s first ‘ColorShop’ and was the forerunner for the national chain of stores. The company pioneered the development of coloured paint bases and has built a reputation as New Zealand’s colour leader. Like his father, Tony was an innovator, taking the company multinational, and introducing new products, processes and colour systems. Tony supported many charitable institutions including Life Flight and Wellington's Mary Potter Hospice.

Sir Russell Matthews 1 Sir Russell Matthews 1896 - 1987 Civil Engineering and Roading

Russell Matthews was born in New Plymouth and began his working life as an assistant engineer for the New Plymouth Borough Council. After serving in World War 1 Mathews stayed in England for three further years to study road construction. He arrived back in New Zealand in 1922 eventually establishing Russell Matthews & Company – the firm becoming New Zealand's largest roading contractor, sealing more than 3000 kilometres of road from Whangarei to Invercargill. Matthews was also a founding director of the New Plymouth-based chemical company, Ivon Watkins Limited, serving on its board from 1944 to 1962. Russell was also a dedicated horticulturist. He and wife Mary created the renowned garden “Tupare” and Russell he was a driving force behind the development of New Plymouth's famous Pukeiti. Matthews was made an OBE in 1971 for his services to industry, horticulture and philanthropy and became a knight bachelor in 1982 for services to horticulture and the community. 2018 Laureates Congratulations to the outstanding 2018 laureates of the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.
