Oliver Lang Ship: 1224 tons Captain: Joseph Mundle Surgeon Superintendent: Sailed London June 18th 1858 - arrived Wellington September 18th 1858

The Oliver Lang was built at Quebec, and on her maiden voyage to Liverpool was wrecked at Bantry Bay (southern Ireland), but was got off and repaired. She made her first appearance in Wellington in 1856, arriving there on December 19th of that year after a smart passage of 85 days from Liverpool. After arriving at Wellington in 1859 she was beached at "Kaiwarra". One story says that she had had a mid-ocean colision with the barque Shan which damaged her hull while the second story says that she arrived in Wellington safely and was blown ashore by a squall. Either way she was condemned and remained there until she broke up. White Wings - Sir Henry Brett

STEWART family: My Ann Cameron (nee STEWART), was born 1841 in Ardnamurchan, Scotland, to Duncan & Anne (nee McPherson) STEWART who came to Wellington with 4 children on "Oliver Lang" in 1858. Ann married John CAMERON 1881 at Opaki where Duncan & his family lived. I was told that Ann was John's housekeeper before they married. I thought John's sheep station was at Pahaoa, but now am not sure of the spelling (if anyone knows can they contact me please). Ann and John Cameron are both buried at Masterton Cemetery, and as far as I am aware, had 10 children, though I have very patchy info on them. Ann's brother, Alexander b. 1843, was my gg grand-father, who married Phillippa Skeet BELL from near Nelson. About 1870 Alexander was working for a "Mr J Cameron of Pahau" (?Pahaoa), and later farmed at Dreyerton & Opaki. They had a brother John who was blind & a piper (never married), and sister Mary b. 1845 married Adam GLASGOW - they farmed at Turakina. Both Duncan and Anne STEWART died at Opaki; Duncan on February 24th 1890 and Anne on June 6th 1888. The STEWART family were active in the Caledonian Society & local school committees. If anyone has a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Joanna Broad.
