

A project for the victims of disasters that have occurred in New Zealand. This project is so that these people will always be remembered.
In 1780, 135+ people were killed by a landslide in Te Rapa/Waihi Village
In the 1820s, 200+ people were killed at Orepuki Beach from a tsunami. The exact number killed is unknown but according to Maori oral histories greater than 200.

7 May 1846, another landslide hit Waihi Village, killing 65 people. Tribal leader Mananui Te Heuheu Tukino II and most of his family were killed in the landslide
7 Feb 1863, the HMS Orpheus shipwrecked off the Manukau Heads near Auckland. 189 people died in this incident.

Between Jul 1863 - Aug 1863, blizzards and floods hit the Central Otago goldfields. 51+ people died. The actual death toll was probably higher because of the transient nature of the miners and the ruggedness of the country
29 Apr 1881, the SS Tararua shipwrecked off Waipapa Point. 131 people lost their lives.

240 km off the Chatham Islands on 11 May 1865, the Fiery Star sank. 87 people died.

On 20 May 1865, off Cape Terawhiti, the City of Dunedin sank, killing 52 people. There are estimates of between 250 and 600 passengers perishing, but these reports were 20 or more years later

In 29 Oct 1894, the SS Wairarapa was shipwrecked off the coast of Great Barrier Island. 121 people lost their lives.

In 12 Feb 1909 off the coast of Cape Terawhiti, the SS Penguin sank, killing 75.

On 3 Feb 1931, Hawke's Bay was hit by an earthquake. 256 people were killed in this earthquake.

On 24 Dec 1953, a rail bridge was destroyed by lahar from Mount Ruapehu. The Whangaehu River bridge, between Waiouru and Ohakune was gone and the train on route to Wellington were unaware of the danger and went off the bridge and into the river. 151 people were killed.

On 10 Apr 1968, the Wahine capsized off Barrett Reef in Wellington Harbour. Due to the weather and temperature, 53 lost their lives.

28 Nov 1979, Air New Zealand Flight TE901 crashed into Mt Erebus in Antarctica. 257 people lost their lives.

On 13 Nov 1990, David Gray went on a shooting spree killing 14 residents of Aramoana including four children.

On 28 Apr 1995, a viewing platform above Cave Creek in Paparoa National Park collapse during a polytech class field trip, killing 14 people.

On 19 November 2010, an explosion in the Pike River mine occurred killing 29 men aged between 17 and 62. Only two survivors got out of the mine. As of March 2018, their bodies are still entombed within the mine.
22 February 2011, 185 lost their lives in the Christchurch earthquake which included the collapse of the CTV building.
