Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Service Medal

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Service Medal was awarded in 2001 to Canadian citizens, who were current or a long-term resident of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Terms

The government of the province shall award a medal to each person:

  • (a) who is a Canadian citizen and is a current or was a long-term resident of the province;
  • (b) who has provided a volunteer service to his or her community, without reward or gain, in an area that is beyond his or her normal duties or responsibility, for a minimum of 10 years; and
  • (c) who has been recommended by the selection committee as a person considered deserving of the award.

The selection committee shall be comprised of 7 members appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor as follows:

a chairperson who shall serve in that capacity for a maximum of 3 years; and

  • * 3 additional members; and
    • 3 members shall be appointed by virtue of their office as follows:
      • (i) the Clerk of the Executive Council,
      • (ii) the Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, with the Chief Justice of the Trial Division acting as his or her alternate, and
      • (iii) the President of the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and with a head of a community college as his or her alternate. Where a person who would be eligible to receive a medal under this Act has died since the recommendation for an award was made public, a medal may be presented to a relative of the volunteer on behalf of that volunteer as prescribed by the regulations. A member of the House of Assembly, a member of the House of Commons or Senate of Canada or a judge of a court of Canada or of a province is not eligible to receive a medal.

The motto is: "NON SIBI SED ALLIS" (Not for oneself but for others).

Description

A circular, silver medal, 36 mm in diameter.

Obverse

The entire motif (four royal lions) is surrounded on the outside rim by the words: NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE MEDAL.

Mounting

A scroll type mounting is used.

Ribbon

A 32 mm wide maroon ribbon with a wide white central stripe (8 mm) with narrow green stripes (2 mm) separating the maroon and the white.

Dates

The medal was assented to by the Newfoundland and Labrador legislature on 19 December 1996 but only issued in 2001.
It was incorporated into the Canadian Honours System in 2003.
