"In the old Pioneer Cemetery on Main Street in Phelps there are two Revolutionary War soldiers buried.
One soldier was Murdock McLeod, the only known Red Coat buried in Ontario County. Murdock died in 1843 at age 90.
The other soldier, Israel Nims of Conway, Mass. died when he came to visit his son in Phelps in 1828 - age 77 years. Israel was one of the men on Lexington Green when the British fired upon them in 1776.
In the SW corner of the cemetery many slaves are buried. They were not allowed to have large tombstones, but one small one reads: "Hannah Riney c. April 3, 1849 age 85 years". -
