In 1889, the Anglican Church established Purewa Cemetery through a gift of land. This cemetery is the final resting place for over 45,000 men, women and children, including many of Auckland's notable business and political leaders, clergy and V.C. holders.
Many of Auckland's historical figures have passed through its doors. Sir Paul Holmes and Sir Edmund Hillary were both cremated there.
There is also a long list of recognisable names among the interred - Sir Robert Muldoon and his wife Dame Thea are buried on the leafy grounds, as are well-known actor Kevin Smith and sports broadcaster Winston McCarthy.
