This project is a meeting place for users who share the R-FGC5660 Y-DNA haplogroup, which means they are related along their paternal lines. Users in this group may want to share their family trees with each other to find overlaps and merge duplicate profiles in order to join or expand the World Family Tree and discover new relatives.

I'm joining this project in order to trace the paternal line of my mother back to Ireland so that I can visit my ancestors' hometown. My cousin provided the Y-DNA for the paternal line. His terminal SNP is R-FGC5660. Our furthest back paternal ancestor is JAMES J BARRY, SR. He and his wife ANNA DALY BARRY emigrated from Ireland to America in early 1865 aboard the SS City of Cork out of Queenstown, Ireland in County Cork (now known as Cobh in Co Cork). James Sr died of yellow fever en route and was buried at sea. James Jr was born in Manhattan, NYC, NY in April 1865, probably at the immigration station at Castle Clinton near Battery Park, on the southern tip of Manhattan. Anna and James made their way to Chicago, IL where Anna remarried and James later married Julia Ann Ponsonby, born of Irish parents in Ontario, CD who later emigrated to Chicago.

Based on information from the Barry Surname Project at Family Tree DNA, our ancestor's are NOT related to the Anglo-Norman Barrys of Mallow, Buttevant, Barryroe, Barrymore, Barrydean, or Manorbier in Wales. We are Gaelic in origin. Word of mouth says that the MacMahon branch of our family are from the same part of Ireland as the Barry branch. My cousin's profile is almost exactly the same as Irish Type III which marks the descendants of Brian Boru but is different by +1 and -1 in two sites over 111 compared to Type III. My son and I have Irish Type II segments in our DNA profiles which mark us as descendants of King Niall of the Nine Hostages on my mother's side. Unfortunately, thousands of Irish Gaelic are also related to Brian Boru and Niall more closely than my cousin. The closest matches we have made are with two O'Donaghues with roots in County Tipperary.

Feel free to contact me via Geni IF you have tested positive for R-FGC5660 haplogroup OR you're a Barry who has tested as NON-Anglo Norman. If you know of a good genealogical researcher based in Chicago or Illinois, feel free to drop their name to me. One avenue we have left is trying to find my greatgreatgreatgrandmother's naturalization papers.
