In the Rainiai forest near Telšiai in 1941 . on the night of June 24 to the 25th massacres of prisoners took place during which 73 intellectuals were killed - lawyers, politicians and other "enemies of the people", among whom was Vladas Petronaitis . The buried victims were found a few days later by a passerby.
Later, the Soviet authorities, in order to erase the memory of this event, demolished the chapel started to be built in the Telšiai city cemetery and cut down the Rainiai forest.
Despite this, the local community did not forget the events and in 1991, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the murder of political prisoners, a new chapel was consecrated in Rainiai. Its ceiling is decorated with frescoes by artist A. Kmieliauskas , in which the martyrs of Rainia are painted.
