Overview of Family History / Progenitor Details

The name Rossouw or Rousseau is an ancient French family name originating from the Burgundy region in France. It has its origin in the French word ‘rousse’ or ‘rouge’, meaning red. The first recorded Rossouw in South Africa is said to be a certain Pierre Rousseau. Pierre, also known as Pieter, was born in Mer in the Loire Valley in France. He died in February 1719 in Paarl in the Western Cape.
He farmed on De Boog van Orleans, by the Bergrivier, Drakenstein. They also had a second farm in Drakenstein, called 'De Vleesbank' according to the inventory drawn up after the death of Anna Retief, and another piece of land in Stellenbosch of 60 morgen.

Francois Josua Rossouw (s.o. Pierre Rossouw, b9 & Maria Rousseau, b1) had at least three ‘Pieter Rossouw’ descendants:

1. By his second wife, Maria Magdalena Rossouw, a son, Pieter Rossouw b 1782-1859 x Maria Magdalena Russouw xx Anna Maria Hendrina Roussouw Cilliers. At the time of his death, he had over 10 children, including another Pieter!

2. By his first wife, Margaretha Hugo, Rossouw, a grandson, Pieter Daniel Rossouw bap 1789 (s.o. Gideon Rossouw & Johanna Susanna De Nikker) x Anna Sophia Rossouw Cilliers, b2c13d2e4f3).

3. By his first wife, Margaretha Hugo, Rossouw, a grandson, Pieter Daniel Rossouw bap 1790 (s.o. Francois Roussouw & Elsje Marie Hugo).

However, the inventory of his stepmother, Maria Retief, dated 10 May 1738, states unequivocally that her children had inherited from him since he had died: "aan de vijf minderjarige kinderen in den hoofde deeses gen:t over sooveel deselve van haar ab intestato overleedene halve broeder Pieter Russouw volgens resolutie deeser Camer van den 21 April laatstl: hebben geeerft" (to the five minor children mentioned above for as much as they have inherited from their ab intestato deceased half brother Pieter Rossouw according to the resolution of this Chamber of 21 April)

Neither Sophia nor Pieter, b9c1 are mentioned in his grandmother, Anne Prevost's inventory dated 10 October 1740 (MOOC8/6.51) as further confirmation that both were deceased at that date.

Therefore, the Pieter Rossouw who married Martha Nortje in 1751 was not Pieter Rossouw, b9c1 but Pieter Rossouw, b7c2 son of Gabriel and Anna Marais.
