
This project is to honor the memory of those who were unjustly accused, refused to accuse others, and heroically stood up to ignorance, superstition, cruelty, and religious persecution; who helped usher in a new time of religious tolerance and enlightenment from an age of horrific darkness where neighbor turned against neighbor, children died in prison, and the victims martyred themselves rather than lie to save their lives. They died with dignity and we shall never forget them. All have been officially absolved of any wrongdoing.
“The only way I know that Salem and its political leaders can atone for such heinous acts is to continue to serve as a story of warning for the rest of the nation, and this world, on what could ultimately happen when you turn your neighbor into the ‘other,’ ” City Councilor David Eppley said.
"It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer", ...as expressed by the English jurist William Blackstone in his seminal work, Commentaries on the Laws of England, published in the 1760s.
