Ponce de Leon is said to have discovered the Fountain of Youth in St Augustine in March of 1513. In honor of his Easter arrival, Ponce de Leon gave Florida its name "Pacula de Flores" (Land of Flowers). There is a statute of Ponce de Leon standing on the east end of the Plaza near the Bridge of Lions. It is a duplicate of the one in San Jaun Puerto Rico.

St. Augustine was founded forty-two years before the English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, and fifty-five years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts - making it the oldest permanent European settlement on the North American continent.
