Profiles

St Peters Anglican Church has been at the corner of Church Street and Ōnehunga Mall since 1848. A wooden church was replaced by a new church in 1930, shifting the old building back for a tower and chancel, designed by D B Patterson. The new church was consecrated in June 1931, but the foundation stone was laid a year before with Masonic ceremony, with corn scattered over the stone by Provincial Grand Master Oliver Nicholson, then the stone was anointed with wine. In 1979, a new church was built around the tower, to the design of architects Gillespie Newman Pierce.

St Peter's Church Graveyard is where many prominent local people who shaped Onehunga now lie. The publicans outnumber the mayors, buried here is the first woman mayor in the British Empire, and there is a naval section with the chaplain from the Orpheus beside other sailors.

Deaths from the Anglican Church register for St Peter's are held at Auckland City Libraries. They includes some details of those buried in the Church cemetery. From 1880 to 22 August 1899 there were 506 internments in St Peter's cemetery. There had been burials there since 1845, at least, and the oldest headstone in 1948 was that of Charlotte Shale who died 16 February 1850.
