The Coy family is one of somewhat mysterious origin in the 18th Century. There appears to be, in particular, two-three separate John Coys who had 20+ children between them in Connecticut, Maryland, and Rhode Island. Christopher Coy, a son of one of these Coys, had a son named Samuel whose descendants would move West.

It is unknown whether any of these 2-3 John Coys actually had a middle name or if somebody just mistook one of one of their marks as an L. John Coy of Nelson County

We should figure out whether this John Coy was 2 or 3 people and if it were 3 - who were the third set of parents?
