  • Umila (c.790 - d.)
The connection of Umila to Rurik as his mother is controversial and based only upon the writings of Vasily Tatishchev .Tatishchev's work, published after his death in 1750, is purported to be based on ...

Owing to a lack of evidence there are many theories about the possible identity of the "husband" of Umila.

Umila was the daughter of Gostomysl, the leader of the Ilmen Slavs.

In one version of the Russian origin myth Umila was the mother of Rurik, the legendary founder of the Rurikid Dynasty, while other versions have Rurik as an unrelated "Varangian" being invited by Gostomysl to come to rule the Slavs after Gostomysl's death. In this second case it is sometimes suggested that Umila may have married Rurik but generally the most popular family structure on the internet has Umila as Rurik's mother.

Regardless of who Rurik's mother was his father's identity is a matter of much conjecture and theorising, usually revolving around various Scandinavian kings and nobles. This results in the Geni profile of Umila being connected to many and varied potential husbands.

The existence of Rurik is a matter of debate but the existence of Umila is based solely on the translations of the Ioachim Chronicle by Vasily Tatishchev in the mid-1700s with no other corroboration.

As we have two people neither of who may ever have existed linking them as mother and son on Geni gives a false impression that this is a substantiated fact.

In disconnecting Umila from Rurik the question is raised as to what to make of the various husbands that Umila seems to have according to Geni members. There is no evidence at all for Umila being married to anyone so all these potential husbands must be getting attached to Umila due to theories regarding Rurik's paternal ancestry.

Having cut Umila's connection to Rurik it only makes sense to cut her connection to all these "husbands" also but rather than casting them adrift I have created this project as a central record for the potentially interested future reader to refer to.
