GEORGE GAWLER, Governor of South Australia. Adelaide, October 17,1838. To His Excellency Lieutenant-Colonel Gawler, K.H., Governor of the Province of South Australia.

May it please your Excellency—

We, the undersigned, Residents of Adelaide and its vicinity, sincerely congratulate your Excellency on your safe arrival in this colony, and assure you of the cordiality with which we welcome your assumption of the important and responsible functions attendant on the Government of the province of South Australia. Warmly attached to the principles on which this colony is founded, we rejoice that the re corded sentiments of your Excellency express your anxiety fully to work out those principles, and we are satisfied that in so doing we may anticipate for this province a rapid and permanent prosperity, unexampled in the history of colonial enterprise. Your Excellency may be assured that towards the prosecution or this object every colonist will yield a cheerful co-operation and a steady support, anxiously desire, as we do, that unanimity of sentiment and effort may characterise our future progress. We trust that in the execution of the high duties of your station your Excellency will, under Divine Providence, be as successful in the ad ministration of its civil affairs as you have been in those military achievements in which you have borne so distinguished a part, and that thus the renown of the warrior may be equalled by the fame of the civilian. Adelaide, October 15, 1838.

We are, with every sentiment of respect, Your Excellency's most obedient servants
