His colorful career matched William Randolph's success in law. Born in 1837 in LaGrange, TN, he spent his early years in Arkadelphia, AK, where his parents moved about 1842. In pursuit of a law career, the senior Randolph accepted a position at the Arkansas Supreme Court clerk's office.

As a young man, he moved to Little Rock to study law. At the beginning of the Civil War, in 1861, he married Rebecca Ellen Wassell while living in Little Rock. 1865, after the war was over, they moved to Memphis, TN.
