The van Helsdingen family is a Dutch surname that originated from Helsdingen,a town in the municipality Vianen in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands.

All South African van Helsdingen's are descendants from Gerijt van Helsdingen born 1380. 5 Generations later Johannes van Helsdingen (Prog/Stam) arrived in SA 1696. Roderick van Helsdingen's research points to the van Helsdingen family coming from the 'Van Vianen" which in turn comes from the "van Bosinchem" family. Earlier van Helsdingen's were residents of Utrecht and most were members of Civil Courts. One of them was even mayor of Utrecht after he lead a rebellion that had to do with freedom of religion.

Nowadays the surname is most common around Zwolle and Utrecht. There were 231 people with this surname living in the Netherlands during the 2007 Netherlands census. They live mostly in the provinces of Utrecht, Zuid-Holland and Overijessel. The surname can also be found in Canada, South Africa, Namibia and the United States of America.
