About the Alburtis surname

The Alburtis surname can be traced to a single individual, namely Pietro Caesar Alberti the first Italaian immigrant to New Amsterdam (now New York). The Dutch had a hard time dealing with his foreign sounding name. In documents from the period of his arrival in 1635 until his death in an indian attack in 1655 he is referred to by numerous names; Peter Petro Alberto, Pieter Cesar alias Mallemock, Peter the Italian and others. After the English siezed New Amsterdam in the 1670's Alberti's three sons were generally kmown as Alburtus and on occaision Alberto. The eldest son. Jan (John) retained the Alburtis name and is the progenitor of all Alburtises who have followed. The two younger sons' decendants were known as Alburtis for a time, but that was anglicized to Burtis over two or three generations. Alberti's greatgrandson and greatgreatgrandson (both named James) were born and married as Alburtis yet their grave stones read Burtis. For anyone researching the Alburtis family it is imperative to also look at the Burtis family genealogies from 1635 to the early 1700's, as these are identical.
