The greatest and earliest concentration of people with the surename "Bentzien" (sometimes also written as "Benzien") appears in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania from around the 16th century, but then spreads around the Baltic, including Denmark, Latvia (Courland, Livonia) and Estonia.
For example, Martin Bentzien from Western Pomerania appears in Libau (Liepaja, Latvia) in the early 17th century. One of his descendants, Erich Bentzien became an advocate in Riga in the 1660s.
