Virtually all Bertenthals in the world can trace their lineage to two individual from Sanok in what is now Poland. The town was part of the Austrian Empire and Austria -Hungary until 1918 when it became part of the Republic of Poland. During the late 19th century, many of the Bertenthals of Sanok left. Some were briefly in what is now Romania but the overwhelming majority of emigration was to the Hamburg area of Germany and Cleveland, Pittsburgh and New York in the United States. Almost all if not all Bertenthals had left Sanok within two years of its becoming part of the Republic of Poland.
