This name and all its spelling variations come from Normandie, France. Specifically Sigy-en Bray, where the first Jean de Bethencourt was established. The records show that as early as 1200 he was in that region. The various forms: Bethencourt; Betancur; bettencourt; Betancourt, etc. son probably misspellings acquired thru the centuries. The name passed to the American continent from the Canarian Islands carried to the islands by Jean de Bethencourt IV some time at the beginning of the 15th century (1400-1404) . This Jean, was paid by the Castilian King of the time to conquest the Canarian Islands. He and his family had the control of the territory of the islands. There are several captains and Alferez registered in the Colombian genealogies. I am still trying to find the Betancourt' who first came to the Colombia territories, which is my genealogical primary interest. I have found several Bethencourt or Betancur, Betancourt .
