They are believed to the direct descendant of Rishi Vasisht, one of the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages Rishi) in the seventh (i.e the present) Manvantara (the age of a Manu). Bhattarai is regarded as one of the high caste in Hindu religion, since the descendant of this sub group is directly related to a saptarishi, Rishi Vasisht.
