Boughner appears to be the spelling adopted by Matthias BOUGHNER a pioneer settler of Windham Township, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. It is derived from the relatively common German name BUCHNER.
The third generation descendants of his cousin, Jacob Buchner, who himself was a founding Loyalist of Woodhouse Township, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. appear to have adopted the Boughner spelling during their lifetime.
The Canadian Buchners - Boughners migrated from New Jersey at the end of the American Revolution and, having been loyal to the King and constitutional order, were given land grants originally in the Niagara area, and later (C1796) traded this land for virgin land in Norfolk County. They had probably fled religious persecution in Germany and had migrated to the Colony of New Jersey in 1765.
Within three and four generations, some Boughner - Buchner offspring had migrated further west in Ontario and to Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Saskatchewan, etc. (Donald Partridge 22 Dec 2010)
