The surname "Brunengraber", also seen as "Brunnengraber", is translated from Yiddish and German as "well digger". In a Jewish context, this is an allusion to the patriarch Isaac, who dug wells during his lifetime (see Parshat Toledot). Thus, it may not be out of reason for the original progenitor of the name to be of a name similar to Isak Brunengraber.
Some members of the Brunengraber family hail from eastern Galicia from the town of Stary Sambor (now called Staryi Sambir in Ukrainian). Upon immigrating to the US, these Brunengrabers shortened and "Americanized" their surname to Braun (whose meaning, "brown", has nothing to do with the original surname).
