According to the "Historical Research Center" BRUNGER, the German surname Brunger is of patronymic origin, being of those surnames derived from the first name of the father or mother of the original bearer. It is, in fact, a variant of the long-established surname Branger which is in turn derived from the very widespread and ancient first name "Brunger". "Brunger", which is still found as a first name in Schwabia, originates in the word "braun" and would originally have been used to identify one of a brown or tawny complexion.
Records of the surname "Brunger" date back to the thirteenth century, when we find the following entry in Die Regisbren bes Stiftes Kreualingen, "de prato
dicte Brungers wise". In 1350, a Benta Brunger was registered as a resident of Malmscheim in the Altwurtttembergische Urbare. The first record of the Brunger version is in 1344, when a Ruodolphus dictus Brungger is listed as a "Notar zu Konstanz" in the Urkundenbuch des Klosters Heiligkrueuztal.
