The Gunneng name (note, not Gunning, though some descendants changed the spelling to Gunning upon coming the the Americas) comes from two farms in what is today Marker, Østfold, Norway. It used to be called Øymark.
Most of the people using the name Gunneng today are descendants of Andreas Halvorsen Gunneng. But there are some from husmannsplasser on the Gunneng farm who still use the name today, and possibly some from the other farm, though the most recent owners use a different name.
The farm Andreas owned, has been in the family since Niels Gunneng, born about 1570. The current owner is a descendant of Niels.
