The name originates in Horodenka, in today what is the southern Ukraine. The Jews of the area tended to think of themselves as Galitzianers. The first recorded use of the name is in an Austrian tax record from 1791, a year after the Emperor required Jews to adopt fixed surnames. His name was Srol Lampner. Lampners renamed in the town till the Nazi's arrival in 1941 when the last remanent of the community was deported to the camps.
