The oldest recorded use of the LeGear surname being used by today's largest family group originates in the Palatinate, (nowadays the Wurtemburg area of Germany) in the mid 15th century. There have been various spellings along the way due, most probably, to the general lack of literacy until the 19th century. With the exodus of so many of the Palatines in the early 1700s from Germany there is ample evidence of the spread of this family to the UK and Ireland, then onwards later to the USA, Canada and Australia. Additionally, members of the LeGear original family group from Wurtemburg emigrated to the USA a bit later, probably 1720s-30s.,
