The original family name of the Linenthals was Goldin. The name changed for some Goldins when they came to the U.S. We are not sure why. One theory is that it was an attempt to sound German. In the early 20th century it was "classier" to be a German Jew than a Russian Jew. There are Lilienthals, Lowenthals, Leventhals, and Lindenthals but so far the only other Linenthal family we have found lives in Arizona, I believe, and is not related to the Boston/San Francisco Linenthals.
"Linen" may be a change in "Lilien", Lily. Or refer to the linen plant. "Thal" means Valley in German.
