Lorey is an uncommon surname in the U.S. but fairly common in Germany. Once your geneaology reaches about 1750 or so, different spellings begin to appear so it is difficult to know the original origin of the name. In my line, the first immigrant to America was Wilhelm Heinrich Lorey and his wife Katharine Kunnegunda Lorey who settled in Portsmouth Ohio and had 8 children. He was from Bischoffingen Germany as were his parents Heinrich Philipp Lorey and Anna Maria Schmidt. Heinrich was originally from Gensingen as were his parents, Wilhelm and Maria Elisabetha Arnold Lorey. Loreys were Burgermeisters (mayors) of Gensingen fromm 1800-1850 or so. It was under French control at the time so some of the documents are in French.
