Malama was adopted by my grandfather (my dad's father) to be the family name for his own lineage. His real surname was Talau where his younger brother and his children carried it on. It was adopted when a Fijian boxer came to Tonga and fought there. My grandfather (Atunaisa Talau) watched him fighting and he admired the way he fought. He then tonganised his fijian name Marama as Malama. In Fiji marama means lady and malama in Tongan means flush of light. I like the flush of light and I like to take it as the meaning of the surname.
