McCaleb is most likely derived from the Scots Highland MacKillop which probably means son of Phillip. In the US most Mackillops shortened the Mac to Mc, and many spelling variations were introduced. My McCaleb ancestors spelled the name McKillip. Other spellings include MacKillip, MacKillop, MacPhilip, MacPhillip McCalib, McCalip and probably others. The Clan Donald USA web site says some MacKillops from Islay were already using the name McCaleb before they left Scotland.
