the surname McVean is unique in the sense that it did not exist before the Jacobite rebellion, or so i am lead to believe. apparently it came about as a result of half the clan that sided with the 'Bruce' at Bannockburn were so ashamed of the half that sided with 'Longshanks' that they changed the family name. so if this is your surname then we are related.
