About the Pandžić surname

Pandžići

A book published in 2017 for the 100th birthday present in honor of Dr Fra Bazilije Stjepan Pandžić contains researched historical data for the origins of this surname. The book is called “Opera Dei revelare honorificum est ... Zbornik radova u Baziliju Pandžić. Ante Glavaš is currently one of the earliest recorded Pandžići members to be traced. Their settlement in the Dalmatian hills of Graovište near Drinovci. It says they are a branch of the Glavaš family (Ante Glavaš alias Pandža) Apparently there is a Pandžić family recorded in Tomislavgrad who originated from Drinovci near Grude. It says they are a branch of the Glavaš family. In the 1741/42 registry of Catholics, Fra Pavao Dragičević recorded two Glavaš families in Drinovci: Martin and Ante Glavaš, with 17 and 7 members, respectively. In the 1768 registry, Fra Marijan Bogdanović found two Glavaš families as well: Martin and Andrija Glavaš with 44 and 11 members, respectively. In 1795 when the parish of Drinovci started to maintain it's own metrical books (i.e. maticne knjige) you start to see the surname combinations Glavaš - Pandžić and Pandžić-Glavaš. Ante Glavaš, who was mentioned in the 1742 registry, carries the Pandža nickname but, in 1768, his son Andrija is seen carrying the Pandžić surname. Pandža the nickname of Ante Glavaš, is not related to the surname Pandža which is found in Goranci near Mostar and originated from the old Karapandzic family.” Pandža translated to English means "Claw.” Ante Glavaš was given the nickname “claw”, however his son Andrija did not keep the Glavaš Surname. Instead, he now carried the surname "Pandžić", which essentially means the now surname “Pandžić” meaning “son of claw” forward from 1768 on until today. Andrija Pandžić alias Glavaš and his wife Anica Nikić had 5 children. They were Toma, Bonoventura, Tomica, Ante, and Gabro, all with the surname Pandžić. These ancestral people were the leading outcome for the expansion of the Pandžići surname Loza throughout the world. Whether it be Christian or Islam in religious background. These names all came from the same area in Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo or Croatia.
