About the Pelech surname

My maternal grandfather (Michael Pelech) migrated from Galicia about 1915, and lived his life in an area just north of Winnipeg, Canada. They spoke Ukrainian and my Aunt said another language which they didn’t know, beside English. My Grandmother Pelech arrived in Canada shortly after my Grandfather and also was from Galicia. They had 5 children, (4 girls and 1 son). My Grandmothers name was Miriam Smigel, but changed her first name to Mary after arriving in Canada. An aunt said that Grandma converted to the Ukrainian Catholic faith before she married my Grandfather. She didn’t say what she converted from. My Grandfather, just before he passed on, said he was from a town in Galicia called Jews town, but didn’t say he or my Grandmother was Jewish. We didn't ask, unfortunately.
