The true origin isn't known, but here are some theories as to the origin: One theory is that it comes from the city of Pskov in Russia. Pskov was previously known as Плѣсковъ, or Plěskov, in 903 A.D., with the name change occurring at some point before 1348. Another theory is a set of two identically named towns in Poland, Płoszkowo (one in the Stargard Powiat and the other in the Choszczno Powiat). They were both formerly located in the German state of Prussia, with their respective names being Ludolphshof and Hütte. Both are small towns with little importance to the history of the region and have populations below 200. There are also the villages of Blaškovec in Croatia, Blaškovina in Serbia, and Błaskowizna in Poland, which may contain less-likely origins to the name.

The definite origin of the surname is now believed to be the city of Plyskiv (Ukrainian: Плисків, Russian: Плискoв, Polish: Plisków) in Ukraine. This is according to Heinrich Guggenheimer's Jewish family names and their origins.
