Roger Rayne was borne in 1272 in Budapest, then a part of Hungary. His father was de Raimes and Roger settled in South Wales founding a lineage of Welsh knights and landowners prominent in the Civil Wars in this region and holding a number of strategically important castles throughout S and W Wales and the Welsh Marches. He married into Welsh 'royalty' (Gladws Hopkin) and his son Robert Hopkin Rayne extended this family. He fought for the English at Agincourt.
