The Thirkill surname dates back to the Vikings and is of Scandinavian origin. The name is mentioned in the 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' from the years 1000-1070A.D.and there are variations of the spelling, like Thurkill, Thurkyll, Thorkill, as in Thorkill the Tall a brave Viking warrior. The name was prevalent in the North of England in the middle ages especially Yorkshire where our branch of the name comes from. One of our Thorkills was related to King Canute in 10th century.The Danes settled in the northern counties of England and Scandinavian influence and names were prominent till the Norman Conquest when French became the language of the courts for the next 300 years. Thirkills owned estates in Yorkshire at the time of The 'Domesday Book' 1086-89 A.D.One of our family members was Catholic Priest 'Blessed Richard Thirkill' who was martyred in York in 1583 by being tortured and hanged from the wall of York.'
