The surname WISSING can be Dutch, Danish, German or English in origin, as it is an old Saxon name deriving from Wis - wise, knowing, and -ing - of, therefore son of the wise one. In South Africa, there are three branches : the descendants of GERRIT JAN WISSING, who arrived in South Africa in 1899 and married twice producing eight children, of whom seven were sons; a branch of Danish origin in Kwazulu-Natal; and another branche, also Dutch who arrived in the 1950s. In old documents, the name can also be spelled WISSINK or WISSINCK
