About the Wychingham surname

The Wychingham family is frustratingly difficult to document prior to Sir William de Wychingham in the 14th century (c. 1320-1381). Several synoptic sources give his father's name as Richard (occasionally as Sir Richard), but there are many gaps pastward of him.

Also flourishing in the 14th century were Sir Geoffrey Wichyngham, merchant, sheriff, and Lord Mayor of London in the year 1346 (died c. 1349) and his brother Hugh, assayer of the mint to Edward III (starting in 1357). They certainly belonged to the same family as Sir William, as they used the same arms: ermine, on a chief sable, three crosses pattée, or. But whether they were also sons of (Sir) Richard, or his brothers, or Sir William's cousins, we simply don't know.

A William de Wychingham, cleric and executor, received a valuable goblet from Walter Suffield, Bishop of Norwich, in his will (made 19 June 1257). (Possibly a younger brother of Walter II de Wychingham.)

Other early Wychinghams include:

  • William son of Wych_r de Wychyngham (fl. 1140s)
  • Roger de Wychingham, fl. early 1200s
  • Walter de Wychingham (son of Roger), died before 1246
  • Sara, widow of Walter, holding the fourth part of a fee 1246
  • Walter de Wychingham (son of Walter I), paid fee not to be knighted 1268, still living 1279; widow, another Sara(h).
  • Roger de Wychingham (son of Walter II), fl. Edward I (between 1272 and 1307)
  • John Wichingham, prior of East Rudham 1449-1463 (resigned)

Other cited clerical Wychinghams:

  • Simon Wichingham, Carmelite friar at Norwich, Doctor of the Sorbonne, fl. 1360
  • John de Wichingham, Franciscan friar, DD. Camb., d. 1362
  • Thomas Wichingham, Carmelite friar at Norwich, Doctor of Cologne, fl. 1372
  • Richard Wickingham, born Norfolk, Carmelite friar, Prior of Burnham, d. 1381
  • Henry Wichingham, Carmelite friar at Norwich, DD Oxon., d. 2 March 1447
