Fun Family History Activities for the Holidays

The holidays are just around the corner! Celebrate this holiday season with some fun activities for the entire family! Check out some ways you can share your family heritage with the ones you love.

Swap Stories

With your entire family gathered in one place, it’s the perfect time to share family stories from the past. Ask an older relative to share a special holiday memory from their childhood or a memory of a passed relative. Have some old family photos laid out too! They make excellent talking points! You might even want to ask your relatives to bring over family heirlooms to share with the rest of the family.

Arts & Crafts with the Kids

Introduce your children to the genealogy bug early! Arts & craft activities centered around your family history can be an excellent starting off point. You can send them on an ancestor scavenger hunt where they have to fill in the blanks on their family tree by interviewing their relatives. It’s a great way to get your children interested in their family history and to get your relatives to share some interesting stories.

Take a Trip

Organize a trip with your relatives to visit some place special in your family history. It’ll be a genealogical adventure! Perhaps visit the home of your great-great grandfather or the local restaurant where your grandparents had their first date. The destination doesn’t have to be any place too far (although a visit to the old country would be nice), but someplace that holds significance to someone in your family. Spend the time together to share memories about why that place is special.

What are some of your favorite holiday activities? Share them with us in the comments below!
